Porn was profitable, illegal and a loadstone for gangsters and profiteers attracted to the easy cash from 8 mm smut loops. Possibly one of the most influential sociological changes since the industrial revolution, the advent of hardcore sex films in public places, stripped away much of the quasi-moral vestiges of the ninetieth century Victorian era.
It was a time when mores, morals and modesty changed inexorably. Pornography was not the only sociological shift; it was happening in the arts, politics and society in general. Whether pornography was a catalyst or a by-product of this change is difficult to cleave, but it certainly played a big part in challenges for first amendment rights.

Although I don't know how true his stories are, the book appears to be written by someone who "was there" and is honest about his feelings both good and bad--and terrified--while working in the business. It is, however, an odd mix of porn stories followed by a huge diversion mid-way into the lies of a Mob killer.
The biggest problem is the lack of proofreading; I don't understand how an intelligent person can let a book full of misspellings, endless punctuation mistakes and poor diction allow his name to be attached to it. This is a very well written, fact filled book. It combines excellent research with first person anecdotes. No where else will you find information on the seedy underbelly of the porn trade. Even if you don't watch porn I don't the insights into the business and life-style of the players is fascinating.
