The American Psychological Association has posted information for the public β particularly to help those distressed because they have family and loved ones in Haiti at www. It is also important to note that all relief agencies are currently recommending against volunteer travel to Haiti. Agencies are communicating the best help that can currently be provided is financial support to relief agencies not volunteers on the ground.
I have been through the American Red Cross Disaster Mental Health training and please know that the Red Cross is not recruiting any volunteers to travel to Haiti at this time. Natural disasters are made worse by our very human-made systems that impoverish people and deny their right to health. As we encourage you to donate to the relief effort, both the Center for Global Initiatives and Hesperian recommend the following organizations which have redoubled their work in Haiti to address this most recent catastrophe: Haiti Action Network's Haiti Emergency Relief Fund Partners in Health Grassroots International, Earthquake Relief Fund for Haiti.
