The City Council last week passed an ordinance that allows police to arrest convicted prostitutes who are standing on a street corner. The ordinance takes effect next year. Early Wednesday morning, police carried out an operation at a homeless encampment along the Rio Hondo River wash next to Rosemead Boulevard. They made 11 arrests and issued 10 citations for narcotics. One of the arrests, on suspicion of possessing speed, was a felony.
The rest were misdemeanors, said Hernandez. All 11 suspects remained in police custody Wednesday afternoon. Police plan to clean out local homeless encampments by removing left-behind junk and periodically making arrests, said Hernandez.
